Privacy Policy
Last updated: September 15, 2026
Short version: Deskmate is local-first. Your todos, notes, widget layout, settings, and any selfies stay on your own computer. Deskmate has no analytics, no ads, and no tracking, and it doesn't send your content anywhere unless you use a feature that explicitly does (the AI chat or voice transcription, described below).
What Deskmate stores on your device
Everything you create in Deskmate is saved locally on your computer and is never uploaded to us (we don't run a server that receives it):
- Your todos, notes, and any images you add to notes
- Your widget layout, workspace modes, and app settings
- Photos taken by the optional selfie feature (see below)
These live in your operating system's per-app application-data folder. Removing them is covered under Deleting your data.
Camera
Deskmate includes an optional feature where, when you check off a todo, the character can take a
quick webcam selfie and show it back to you. This is off unless you turn it on and
grant camera permission. When used, the photo is saved only to a folder on your device
(selfies in the app-data folder) and is never uploaded or sent to anyone.
You can open and delete these photos at any time.
AI chat (only in versions that include it, and only if you use it)
Some versions of Deskmate include an AI chat. Deskmate does not have its own AI account or key — when you send a chat message, it runs the Claude command-line tool already installed on your computer, which communicates with Anthropic under your own Claude account. Anything you send through that chat is therefore handled according to Anthropic's privacy policy. If you never use the chat, nothing is sent.
Voice transcription (optional)
If you enable voice input and provide your own OpenAI API key, the audio you record is sent to OpenAI for transcription and is handled under OpenAI's privacy policy. This is off by default and does nothing without your own key.
What Deskmate does not do
- No analytics, telemetry, or usage tracking
- No advertising and no ad identifiers
- No selling or sharing of your data
- No account required to use the app
This website
If you join the waitlist on our website, the email address you enter is stored so we can let you know about the release. It is used only for that purpose and is not sold or shared. If you'd like it removed, contact us (below).
Deleting your data
Because your data lives on your device, uninstalling Deskmate and deleting its application-data folder removes it. Selfies can also be deleted individually from the selfies folder, which the app can open for you.
Children
Deskmate is not directed at children under 13 and does not knowingly collect information from them.
Changes
If this policy changes, we'll update the date at the top of this page.
